plan b was a plan that was advocated by nancy pelosi, was advocated by chuck schumer less than two years ago. they said that what we should do is raise taxes on people that make a million dollars or above. there were only 50 house republicans who said they were not going to vote for plan b. you couldn't even get 50 house democrats to vote for something like that, to send somethi to the senate and then the senate could maybe raise taxes on people that make less than that. so don't blame the republicans when it's the democrats that are unwilling to work on anything. when the president said that he wanted to look at chain cpi -- >> that's the -- >> that's a nonstarter. >> changing the way social security payments are attached to the cost of living. >> the democrats in the senate are divided on what that tax rate should be as well as on taxes on small business as well as the death tax. they are very divided on this issue. >> the estate tax. yeah. so let me have you answer that. i have another subject i want to bring up. do you think there will be a deal and that most taxes will not go up? >>

for house speaker john boehner to agree to bring it to a vote on the house floor, and leader nancy pelosi to produce the huge number of democrats needed to pass it. but if that plan falls through -- >> then i will urge senator reid to bring to the floor a basic package for an up or down vote. >> the president's basic package has much more for democrats to like. so don't expect that to get very far. but all sides now agree the senate must first pass a bill before the house makes any kind of move. so all eyes will be on mitch mcconnell and harry reid and their negotiators holed up on capitol hill. the senate comes back into session at 1:00 on sunday. >> jessica yellin, thanks. >>> and with the pressure now squarely on the senate to fix the fiscal cliff, they will lead the talks this weekend. a period of time reid calls, quote, very important, mcconnell says he's hopeful both sides will have a plan to present to their respective members as early as tomorrow. and other republican and democratic senators are underscoring the importance of reaching an agreement soon. >> if we don't have a deal

at least so far as nancy pelosi is concerned. you can see this tape. she obviously has left the meeting. john boehner, the speaker of the house, has also been seen leaving. so what we want to do is find out what is going on here. obviously we have our jessica yellin there and we will talk to her a little later about what she has learned. now, the fiscal cliff and these last-ditch talks is the only game in town. joining me for today's strategy session is roland martin and cnn contributor erick erickson, editor-in-chief of. they are saying, hey, we don't have to compromise. we have more people in congress coming in that are democrats. the president doesn't have to give on that $250,000 top. where do you stand on this? do you think the president does or should compromise up to -- particularly on the tax issue? >> you can't be a democrat and ask republicans to compromise if you don't want to give up something. i think the president clearly understood that. so when he laid the $250,000 out, he gave himself some room because, again, you saw speaker boehner's

senate majority leader harry reid, minority leader, mitch mcconnell, john boehner and nancy pelosi. all four met at the white house yesterday afternoon with the president and vice president. and jessica yellin is our chief white house correspondent, and jessica, the president used his bully pulpit after that meeting to sort of reinforce the idea that senators need to get busy. so let's give that a listen first. >> the american people are watching what we do here. obviously, their patience is already thin. this is dejavu all over again. america wonders why it is that in this town for some reason you can't get stuff done in an organized timetable. why everything always has to wait until the last minute. well, we're now at the last minute. and the american people are not going to have any patience for a politically self-inflicted wound to our economy. >> jessica, you were in the room for the president's remarks and he said he was optimistic but he was also clearly a bit ticked off. so i'm wondering about this waiting until the last minute, the weekend, to get this all done. what is the

does john boehner need nancy pelosi in order to get anything passed? >> reporter: yes, absolutely. no question about it. that became incredibly obvious when he couldn't even get his own republicans to effectively save them from themselves and at least have some political cover by voting to keep tax cuts in place for everybody except millionaires because they said they wouldn't help him with what they call a political ploy. i think that's true but actually talking to people on both sides of the aisle here, because the ball is now in the senate -- the senate's court, the feeling is that if they can kind of break the dam in the senate and if something actually passes, you've already seen over the past two days house republicans saying that they hadn't said before, if the senate passes something, we'll take it up. and if that's the case, the sort of betting is that with the help of the majority of the democrats, probably most of the democrats and maybe, you know, a few dozen or more republicans, that's how it would get passed. but, candy, it's still a big if, as we just witnessed, whet

president obama, top leaders harry read and nancy pelosi and mitch mcconnell and him. it was only a short while ago that john boehner was called a dictator. with the deadline looming the goal appears to be to shield most american taxpayers from automatic tax increase. now, the president's already agreed to raise income taxes on americans earning more than $400,000. that's up from his $250,000 goal set in the campaign, and there's also an effort to extend jobless pen fits for americans out of work for six months or more. >> major, do we have any reason to believe that this time it is different? >> well, certainly. the deadline is real. the house is coming back into session on sunday. even is going to be here either to preside over america going over the fiscal cliff or last-minute very small deal that averted for a while and leaves more negotiations for the future. >> major garrett, thank you very much. general norman schwarzkopf, commander of the coalition for the gulf war died yesterday. he tricked and outflanked saddam hussein's forces in just 101 hours. he gave this
